Liam Turk took his final breath while sleeping in the early-morning hours of Tuesday, March 17, 2020, stolen from us by SUDEP, which stands for “Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy”. It was St. Patrick’s Day, a day usually marked by raucous celebration, but which is forever laced with tragedy for the loving family he left behind. His birthday, January 8, was shared with Elvis and David Bowie, two of his musical idols. He was just a kid, only 14 years old, but universally recognized as being wise beyond his years, and this album stands as proof of that.

Liam’s love for music was innate, and his deep compassion for people was pure instinct. That is to expected: his paternal grandparents were Episcopal priests, and his mother, Angela, is a therapist. He shared their empathic, caregiving spirit, and it was evident in the total joy he had in every facet of his life. He had a special love for animals, particularly rescue pets, of which he had many--maybe even too many, if there is such a thing.

Liam grew up in Jacksonville, Florida; his life revolved around music. His grandfather, Bill Binkley, owned the legendary Abe Livert Records, and his father Ryan is a veteran of the local music scene. The kid was already well on his way down the path toward a music career of his own. He spent three years studying guitar at LaVilla School of the Arts, under the great Don Casper, and was slated to start at Douglas Anderson in the fall of 2020.

Liam wrote a number of songs, and had already begun recording demos in advance of his own album. Since that never came to pass, his family and friends have come together to give this material the proper treatment it deserves. Ryan Turk and Michael Martin oversaw the recording, mixing and arranging of the album, which also features contributions by Rickolus, Jude Kahle, Ava Rae Clark and Jillian Turk. The album was recorded at Warehouse Studios, where much of our very best local music has been created. You can add this album to that long, long list.

It’s summer now, and Liam Turk has been gone for a few months, but his spirit shines brighter than ever. This album stands in embodiment of his legacy--not just as a musician and a songwriter, but as an old soul in a young man’s body whose impact on this community will be felt for as long we are living, and then some. - Shelton Hull
